Image-wide sharpness from F1.2
Resolution and contrast are outstanding throughout the aperture range-right up to F1.2. Three XA (extreme aspherical) lens elements in an advanced optical path subdue overall aberration, and other advanced optical technologies minimize chromatic aberration in a lens that is surprisingly compact and lightweight.
Compact mobility means creative freedom
Large-aperture lenses are often large and heavy. The FE 50 mm F1.2 GM is only 3.5 x 4.38" (87 x 108 mm) and weighs just 27.5 oz (778 g). State-of-the-art optics plus Sony's amazing XD Linear Motors and mechanical design come together in a convenient, mobile lens for any shooting situation.
Smooth, refined G Master bokeh
Three XA (extreme aspherical) elements with 0.01-micron surface precision-plus painstaking spherical aberration control at the design and manufacturing stages-contribute to gorgeous G Master bokeh that can really make portrait and other subjects stand out, especially at the lens's maximum F1.2 aperture.
Nano AR Coating II ensures clear images in backlit scenes
Sony's Nano AR Coating II helps to achieve clear, well-defined images even in strong sunlight and backlighting. This advanced coating is evenly applied to entire element surfaces, effectively minimizing internal reflections so that flare and ghosting do not occur.
Bokeh-enhancing 11-blade circular aperture
A new 11-blade circular aperture mechanism contributes to beautiful bokeh. Circular highlights are exquisitely rendered too, further enhancing the widely acclaimed beauty of G Master bokeh. Out-of-focus backgrounds are smoother and more pleasing in just about any situation and lighting.
Close-ups with stunning bokeh
1.32 ft (0.4 meter) minimum focus and 0.17x maximum magnification deliver extra close-up flexibility for both stills and movies. XA (extreme aspherical) lens elements and a floating focus mechanism make it possible to achieve pinpoint sharpness while taking advantage of creamy F1.2 background bokeh at any focusing distance.
Natural, linear manual focus response
Linear Response MF ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually. Focus ring rotation translates directly to a corresponding change in focus, so control feels immediate and precise. Linear Response MF enhances manual focus control for both stills and movies.
XD Linear Motors achieve fast, precise, quiet AF and tracking
Fast, accurate focus is assured even with shallow F1.2 depth of field. Four XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors deliver high thrust to position the large, heavy focus groups for precision AF and tracking. High resolution is maintained at all focusing distances with the full AF speed and precision of E-mount bodies-for both stills and movies.
Customizable focus hold button and more for advanced control
Focus hold buttons located on the top and side of the lens can be assigned to a number of other functions via a camera body menu, providing direct access to functions that are vital to the user's personal workflow, including right/left eye selection for Eye AF on bodies that support that feature.
Aperture ring with click on/off switch
An aperture ring is also provided for direct, intuitive aperture control. A handy switch allows the aperture ring click stops to be turned off for quiet movie shooting.
Dust and moisture-resistant design
A dust- and moisture-resistant design provides the reliability needed for outdoor use in challenging conditions.
Fluorine front-element coating
The front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants, while making it easier to wipe off any contaminants or fingerprints that do become attached to the lens surface.

Owning the zeiss 55 F1.8 I was spoiled with sharpness but this 50 just has that extra umph to the rendering. Colors pop and focus is blazing fast! if you have the zeiss 55 I would highly recommend this as an upgrade

Sony FE 50MM F/1.2 GM
The FE 50mm F2.5 G lens delivers high resolution and beautiful bokeh in an ultra-compact lightweight package, featuring aspherical lens elements for sharp detail across the entire image and an ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element to reduce chromatic aberration. Its dual linear autofocus motors keep up with the most demanding cameras for high speed AF tracking.
The high-quality G Lens optical design incorporates two aspherical lens elements for sharp detail and one ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element that reduces chromatic aberration for outstanding corner-to-corner resolution. In addition, the state-of-the-art optical design takes maximum advantage of the short flange back, unique to mirrorless cameras, to realize stunning compactness at 68mm diameter x 45mm and a weight of only 174g. Mobility is a key feature, preserving the compactness of the overall E-mount system whether shooting with a full-frame or APS-C body or shooting either still images or movie.
The F2.5 max aperture is ideal for low-light situations for maximum light gathering capability while also providing a shallow depth of field. Beautiful natural bokeh expected from a G Lens is delivered with minimal spherical aberration and provision of a 7-blade circular aperture for round defocused light sources.
High image quality is realized by the inclusion of two aspherical lens elements compensate for various aberrations, delivering high resolution performance from corner to corner of the image, even from the widest aperture with shallow depth of field.
The FE 50mm F2.5 G incorporates an ED glass element to suppress chromatic aberration and effectively reduces color fringing that is more likely to occur in the image periphery, leaving precisely rendered edges with no fringing or unnatural coloration, while significantly reducing flare and ghosting.
While conventional aperture blades have flat sides that create unappealing, polygonal-shaped defocused points of light, the FE 50mm F2.5 G incorporates a 7-blade circular aperture mechanism to maximizes the beauty of this large-aperture prime-lens. The wide f2.5 aperture and circular aperture blades contribute to impressive images in which the subject stands out against a smoothly defocused foreground and background, as well as perfectly round points of defocused light.
Taking full advantage of the continuing rapid advances in the speed and performance of newer camera bodies, two linear motors are used in the FE 50mm F2.5 G lens to deliver fast, precise AF (autofocus) with excellent tracking performance. Tracking is maintained despite instantaneous changes in subject motion, making the lens ideal for situations require tracking a moving subject.
Linear Response MF (manual focus) ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually. Focus ring rotation translates directly to a corresponding change in focus, so control feels immediate and precise in both still and movie modes.
Get a unique perspective through close-up, wide angle shooting. The standard 50mm angle of view is useful in applications from snap shots to movie shooting. The FE 50mm F2.5 G features an impressive minimum focus distance of 14.78” (0.35m) (AF) / 12.2” (0.31m) (MF) and maximum magnification of 0.18x (AF) / 0.21x (MF). With the wide F2.5 max. aperture, you can also shoot close-ups with beautiful blurred background bokeh.
The FE 50mm F2.5 G lens has clear advantages for moviemaking. With a standard 50mm angle of view on full frame bodies and 75mm on APS-C bodies or Super 35mm cameras, dual linear motors for fast, precise autofocus and tracking, a bright F2.5 maximum aperture for beautifully defocused background bokeh, excellent close-up performance and a class leading ultra-compact and lightweight design, this lens is ideal for all types of content creators. In addition to the super small size and light weight, its internal focus design makes it convenient for use on compact gimbals or grips for vlogging and other applications.
The ultra-compact FE 50mm F2.5 G lens measures 68mm diameter x 45mm and weighs in at only 174g. This makes it ideal for both APS-C as well as full-frame camera users. Its ultra-compact size and light weight balances well on smaller APS-C format bodies, providing a very useful mid to telephoto focal length of 75mm (full-frame format equivalent). This super small lens is also ideal for full-frame users wanting a standard 50mm field of view who prize compact size and weight to reduce their load, especially for those photographers and videographers who travel a lot.
Instantly and quickly switch between auto and manual focus via an AF/MF switch on the side of the lens. This makes operation faster and easier as you let the camera and lens focus for you or decide to take control and manually focus on the precise point you choose.
A responsive manual aperture ring offers positive action that will satisfy photographers and moviemakers alike. The aperture ring click stops can be switched on or off as required. “Off” is the preferred setting for moviemaking since it results in the least aperture operation noise. When “On” the ring provides tactile feedback that is useful when shooting stills.
The focus hold button not only performs the traditional function to lock focus when recomposing, but can be customized to a number of other functions depending on your needs. In addition to Focus Hold, these custom functions include: Eye AF, AF On, Aperture Preview, Shot Result Preview or Bright Monitoring.
Despite the ultra-compact size of the FE 50mm F2.5 G, its dust and moisture resistance design make this lens appropriate for outdoor use, especially when combined with a camera that employs weather resistant measures.
The superb high-quality build uses durable metal (aluminum) for the exterior finish and hood, achieving a sophisticated look, providing satisfaction of ownership, and contributing to increased strength and durability. The iris ring indices, focal length markings, and Sony logo on the hood, are engraved rather than printed, giving a finish with a sophisticated feel.
The internal focus design maintains the overall length of the lens constant when focusing, allowing easy movie shooting with a small gimbal or grip attached. Focusing with a PL filter attached is also worry-free.
